Current British Champion and former Grand Prix rider Scott Nicholls will be on hand to help get the new season underway at Workington when the Comets entertain the Newcastle Diamonds in the inaugural Ian Thomas Shield clash at Derwent Park on Saturday 30th March.
The fixture, which will be the first staged by the Comets new promotional team, will also see Nicholls take part in three match races against Workington riders throughout the evening. In addition, the popular Nicholls will be available to sign autographs and pose for photographs with the fans as the club aims to get their new season off to a flying start.
Nicholls, who is a record seven-time British Champion, will be making his first ever visit to Derwent Park and will be keen to show his undoubted class around the large Derwent Park circuit. Meanwhile the Comets riders will be keen to make use of their home track knowledge against the Coventry and Team GB international rider.
"We wanted to do something special to mark our first home meeting as promoters and with Scott being one of the most popular riders in the country, and the reigning British Champion, he was an obvious choice to give the fans something extra on what promises to be a terrific opening night of the season.
"The fact that he has never previously appeared at Derwent Park makes the occasion a little bit special too; and of course we also have the first leg of the Ian Thomas Shield against a very solid Newcastle side.
"In many ways it is fitting that we should have Scott appearing at this meeting as Ian Thomas was always a great advocate of having an additional attraction for the fans on opening night," said Co-Promoter Laura Morgan.
