The Comets picked up their first away league victory of the season at Berwick's Shielfield Park on Saturday night - running out 46-44 winners after a dramatic last race that saw the Comets take the lead for the first time in the match, but that is the only time that matters!
Going into the match without Rene (away competing in the Danish semi-final) the Comets found themselves on the wrong end of two heat maximums in heats 2 and 3 to trail by eight points after just three races. However, a 5-1 in heat 5 from Richard and Rusty was followed by a 4-2 in heat 6 courtesy of Kyle and Ashley to bring the Comets to within just two points of their hosts.
Then, with Richard and our guest for the evening, Edinburgh's Jozsef Tabaka, taking a heat advantage in the eighth heat we were all square.
Berwick notched up a 5-1 in heat 10 to edge in front before Rusty and Jozsef returned the favour in heat 12 to level the scores once again, at 36-36.
Although Berwick's Kozza Smith got the better of Richard in the heat 13 'battle of the captains' a shared heat 14 meant that everything was to play for in the final race.
Berwick had choice of gates, surprisingly selecting gates 2 and 4, but when the tapes rose it was Rusty and Richard that sped away into turn one with Richard following Rusty and capping a fine return from injury by riding a clever tactical race to keep David Bellego behind him in order to secure a Comets 5-1 and a great away victory, 46-44; much to the delight of the large number of Comets fans that had made the journey across to the east coast in order to support them, which was very much appreciated by the team.
BERWICK BANDITS 44: Kozza Smith 11, David Bellego 9, Matthew Wethers 9, Nicki Barrett 5, Robin Aspegren 4+2, Alex Edberg 3+2, Nick Morris (guest for injured Ricky Ashworth) 3+1.
WORKINGTON COMETS 46: Richard Lawson 14+2, Rusty Harrison 10+2, Jozsef Tabaka 8, Kyle Howarth 7+1, Tero Aarnio 5+2, Ashley Morris 2, R/R for Rene Bach.
