A disappointing visit to Leicester saw the Comets come away without any points to show for their efforts for the first time in a league match this season.

On a track where gating is paramount and overtaking is 'difficult' to say the least the Comets were often out-gated and, despite clearly having more speed than the rider in front on several occasions, they were unable to overtake.

Comets team manager Tony Jackson said: "Overall it was a disappointing night as we hoped to pick up at least one point although we were obviously well aware of the fact beforehand that gating would be crucial there.

"After seven races we were only two points down and, despite slipping to a ten-point deficit after heat 11, an 8-1 from Rusty and our excellent guest Cameron Heeps in heat 12 brought us back to within three points with just three races to go.

"However in heat 13 a clever first and second bend from the Lions Captain, former Comet Kauko Nieminen, saw him take Richard wide to enable his team mate Magnus Karlsson to come up the inside and join him for a vital Leicester 5-1.

"This meant that we needed to get something from heat 14 and, for over a lap, it seemed as if we would get something as Cameron Heeps led while Kyle held third place. But, on the second lap, at the apex of turns one and two, Kyle locked up and was thrown heavily off the back of the bike onto the track. Although thankfully only winded he was excluded from the re-run.

"Typically, the re-start saw the Lions pair out-gate Cameron and block his run to the first corner to effectively end our hopes of getting at least a point out of the match as a possible Comets 4-2 had become a Lions 5-1.

"That meant that we needed an unlikely 5-0 in the last heat to snatch a league point, but with Magus Karlsson making the gate it was all over; despite Richard gaining revenge over Kauko for his defeat two races earlier by taking second place ahead of him!"
