Premier League (league points: Workington 3 Edinburgh 0)
Saturday, October 18

The Comets completed their home Premier League fixtures by claiming all three league points from Edinburgh – the 2014 Play-off Grand Finalists, KO Cup winners and League Cup winners, at Derwent Park on Saturday night.

Despite being without Josh and Rene the Comets were served well by guest Aaron Summers (for Josh) and rider replacement (for Rene), which contributed 9 points, and a fantastic 14-point score from Simon, who was only deprived of a five-ride maximum by Max Fricke in heat 14 when the Aussie gained revenge after ‘Lambo' had beaten him with an excellent ride in heat 12.

With Kyle back to his best and a solid score from stand-in skipper Ricky it proved to be a great night for the Comets, who made the best possible start to the match by taking maximum points from the first four heats.

Meanwhile topping the Edinburgh score-chart with 15 points apiece were former Comet Craig Cook and rising Aussie star Max Fricke, who both won their tactical rides, while Sam Masters was also involved in some hard-fought races, particularly with Kyle.

Kyle held the ever-pressing Masters off in heat 4 before later cutting under him on turns three and four on the opening lap of heat 9 to take the win. Kyle was also involved in two cracking races with Craig Cook; the first when he held him off to win heat 11 and then in an excellent heat 15 where he was hard on his heels for all four laps, in fact he was pushing so hard he almost came to grief on turns one and two of the third lap before closing the gap on him again on the final lap.

The Comets went into that final heat needing two points to secure all three available league points and despite the Monarchs having the choice of gates the Comets pairing of Kyle and Ricky entered the first turn with them and by the time they exited turn two the Comets had the minor places filled. Then, while Kyle pushed race leader Craig Cook, Ricky did a great job of blocking any move that Max Fricke made to ensure that the heat points were shared and the Comets won the match by ten points.

Special praise must also go to the Comets track staff who worked from very first thing right up until start time to get the track fit for racing after the very wet weather on Friday night.

Many tons of wet dirt were taken off and as the surface dried out new dirt was added to enable the meeting to go ahead when many feared the worst after the rain of Friday night.

Simon Lambert 14, Kyle Howarth 13+1, Ricky Wells 11+2, Aaron Summers (guest) 7+2, Mason Campton 6+3, Joe Jacobs 2+1, RR for Rene Bach.

Craig Cook 15, Max Fricke 15, Sam Masters 8+1, Justin Sedgmen 4+1, Aaron Fox 1, Max Clegg (guest) 0, RR for Steve Worrall.
