RICKY WELLS SET TO RETURN FOR A SECOND SEASON WITH THE COMETS!
The Workington Comets management are delighted to announce that Ricky Wells is the sixth name to be added to the Comets team sheet for the 2015 season.
The twenty-three year-old New Zealand-born American; who was voted the Comets ‘Rider of the Year' by supporters in an online poll conducted by the local ‘News & Star' newspaper becomes the third member of last season's side to be given a return ticket to Derwent Park for 2015.
He will now link up with his 2014 team-mates Rene Bach and Mason Campton, along with new signings Kenneth Hansen, Nicki Barrett and Michael Palm Toft, with one further rider yet to be named, for the Comets assault on Premier League silverware next season.
Comets owner Laura Morgan said: “Ricky had been keen to come to Workington in the past so it was good to finally make it happen last season, and as both parties wanted that relationship to continue next year it was a pretty easy decision to have him back for 2015.
“Ricky proved to be very popular with the supporters, as his victory in the Rider of the Year poll showed, and we certainly haven't seen the best of him yet as I believe that he has plenty more to give in 2015.
“I am very happy with how the team is coming together and I believe that all six riders we have named so far are more than capable of boosting their average, with every one of them capable of winning races home and away.”
Comets team manager Tony Jackson added: “By his own very high standards Ricky had a difficult start with us last season, but he worked hard and turned things around mid-season, going on to finish the campaign very strongly indeed.
“One of the main reasons we signed Ricky last season was for his away form, which again was very good in 2014, and he starts next season on an average of 6.49, which in my opinion is a figure that he is more than capable of adding to by some way.
“Ricky is very professional and ambitious in his outlook and I am very much looking forward to working with him again next season. Despite his relatively young age he has plenty of experience and has represented America on the world stage where he has gained plenty of knowledge by racing alongside three-time World Champion Greg Hancock, which has been of great benefit to him in his career.”
The Comets now have 7.16 points available for their final rider, which means that their reserve pairing going into the season is now confirmed as being Nicki Barrett and Mason Campton, a situation that owner Laura Morgan is very happy about.
“What has become clear over the past two seasons where I have been involved is the need for good reserves that can pick up points throughout the match, with strong reserves very much becoming the norm in the Premier League these days,” she said.
“One of our aims when putting the team together for next season was to have Mason Campton starting the season at reserve, which we believe will be a major benefit, especially if covering for absent, injured or out of form riders.
“Mason has another year's experience under his belt after his first season with the Comets and he is certainly capable of showing some real progress in 2015. We believe that starting the year at reserve will kick start his season and be of long term benefit to him and to the team.
“Hopefully, if the top five do their job and we can get points from the reserve berths we will be there or thereabouts come the end of the year,” concluded Laura.
With the identity of six riders now revealed the Comets management hopes to be in a position to announce the final member of their 2015 line-up within the next few days.
