The Comets opened their League Cup account with a victory over the hotly-tipped Glasgow Tigers in an entertaining encounter at Derwent Park with the Tigers holding a slender two-point advantage after heat 8 but from then on the Comets eased ahead to have the meeting won with a race to spare.

Workington endured a few problems in the early stages with skipper Rene Bach being hampered by a burnt out clutch in his first ride and then his clutch basket came apart just as he was about to take to the track for his second outing, causing him to be excluded for exceeding the two minute time allowance.

However, once rectified Rene raced to two fine race wins in his remaining outings, including a from the back victory over Aaron Summers in heat 9.

Rusty Harrison and Kenneth Hansen (aboard a new engine) made valuable contributions while at reserve Nicki Barrett had some problems; including a loose throttle in heat 12, which cost him a likely two points while young Nathan Greaves struggled on his comeback from a hand injury.

Ricky Wells (pictured above leading heat 8) continued his fine early season form to pick up 11+1, including three race wins, while Kyle Howarth, who also had three race wins in his 11 point total, was involved in arguably the race of the night as he came from behind at the end of lap one to defeat former Comets number one Richard Lawson in a barnestorming heat 13 that had the crowd on their feet.

For the Tigers, Lawson failed to win a race on his former home track while Nick Morris topped their scorechart with 12 points and he recorded three of their five race wins. However, a 5-1 from Morris and Lawson in an exciting last race that had both Ricky and Kyle snapping at their exhaust pipes throughout, saw the Tigers take a match point away with them, while the Comets had already claimed their three available match points before the final race began.
