The Comets were eliminated from this year's Knockout Cup competition at Rye House this afternoon where a full-strength Rockets side saw off the depleted Comets by a 60 - 30 score to go through to the quarterfinals by a 99 - 81 aggregate score.
The Rockets will now face Ipswich or Berwick in the next stage of the competition, with the Ipswich Witches looking the favourites to face them after a narrow first leg defeat at Shielfield Park, which would set up an interesting relatively local derby for Rockets and Witches fans.
Making the trip down to Hertfordshire always looked a tall order once it was deemed that Kenneth Hansen would not be able to take his place in the side. But, once Kyle Howarth was forced to withdraw on medical advice after suffering a twisted left knee in his heat 13 fall when his engine seized then it became even more difficult.
With National League rider Luke Crang taking the place of Kenneth at number one and rider replacement for Kyle then it was clearly going to be a tough afternoon for Team Manager Steve Whitehead.
Nevertheless, the team battled gamely against a full-strength side on a track much smaller and slicker than our own, with skipper Rene Bach and the in-form Ricky Wells taking the fight to the Rockets.
The Comets actually saved their best for last as Ricky Wells won heat 13, heat 14 and then heat 15 to make it three in a row; and with Rene Bach taking third place in heat 15 the Comets actually finished the match with a heat advantage.
