For the second time in four weeks the Comets saw off the challenge of Rye House at Derwent Park, this time with a 50-42 victory over the visitors.
However, victory was only guaranteed in the final heat (pictured above) when Ricky Wells and Rene Bach secured maximum points to end any hopes that the Rockets had of taking anything away from Cumbria.

But unfortunately the Comets victory was marred by the news that young reserve, Nathan Greaves, had sustained a broken right leg in a heat 2 crash - see separate story.

This left guest reserve; Glasgow's James Sarjeant, to take all of Nathan's remaining rides, giving him seven outings in total. Meanwhile there were pleasing performances from several Comets, with the full five-ride maximum from skipper Rene Bach making him the Rider of the Night.

Ricky Wells and Kyle Howarth continued their fine form while Matthew Wethers had his best meeting so far in Comets colours but Kenneth Hansen struggled from the gate all night.

However, the race of the night was undoubtedly Rene's overtake of Nikolaj Jakobsen in heat 9 when the visitor was having a tactical ride.

With three heats remaining the Comets led by 12 points but a Rockets 5-1 in heat 13 and again in heat 14 meant that a third successive 5-1 would give the visitors what had apperaed to be a few heats earlier, an unlikely draw.

But, after the first attempt at starting heat 15 was deemed unsatisfactory by referee Michael Breckon the Comets duo of Rene and Ricky flew from the gate at the second time of asking to seal victory and, coming off the final bend, Ricky slowed to allow Rene to take the chequered flag and complete his well-deserved maximum.
