The new-look Comets got off to a winning start last night against the Ipswich Witches, who were tipped as possible title winners by the Speedway Star pundits before the season started.

A dream start saw the Comets take maximum points from the first three heats to surge into a 15-3 lead. With the opening race tape to flag race victory by comeback man Rusty Harrison being particularly sweet.

With the Comets 14 points ahead after just four heats the visitors immediately gave Team GB star Danny King a tactical ride, which he won easily.

After that the Witches matched the Comets blow for blow until the final race when, with the Comets already assured of victory and the three points that brought, the Witches made their choice of gates for the nominated race count.

Danny King and Nico Covatti powered from the start to leave Ricky Wells and Rene Bach trailing in their wake and despite the best efforts of Ricky the Witches recorded a 5-1, which was just enough to give them a consolation match point.

A return to form for Kenneth Hansen (pictured above), aboard a different engine to that used recently, proved invaluable in what was his first appearance at reserve, as decreed by the new average that is in force for him until the end of June.

Kenneth raced to 12+3 from six rides after taking fellow reserve Matt Williamson's last ride and also the last outing of Rusty, who was tiring in what was his first meeting back on track after the serious injury he sustained at the end of April.
