Workington Comets 57 Scunthorpe Scorpions 36 (Premier League)

The Comets racked up another three league points at Derwent Park last night with a comfortable victory over the Scunthorpe Scorpions for whom only guest Michael Palm Toft caused the Comets any major problems as he registered 15+1 from six outings, which included a tapes-to-flag race victory when on a tactical ride in heat 5.

Palm Toft's only other real support came from Scunthorpe skipper Theo Pijper, who picked up 8 points from six rides, which included a heat 8 race win over Kenneth Hansen in his tally.

Palm Toft, riding as a guest for the injured Aussie Ryan Douglas, received a 'warm reception' from the Comets supporters, who clearly remembered the fact that he signed for the Comets during the winter before pulling out of the deal as he was intending remaining in Denmark - but he now rides in the UK for Peterborough!

The Comets were missing the in-form Ricky Wells, who was taking part in a GP qualifying meeting in Latvia (where he scored 3 points and failed to qualify), but nevertheless they recorded their biggest victory of the season so far on a night where there was plenty of good racing, passing and entertainment in a meeting that was far more exciting than the score would suggest.

Comets' riders took the chequered flag on twelve occasions with all team members except reserve Nicki Barrett winning at least one race, while Kenneth Hansen clocked the fastest time of the night, 63.7, in heat 2.

Skipper Rene Bach (pictured above with Matthew Wethers in heat 9) was back to his best after last weekend's illness affected his scoring and dropped only one point (to Palm Toft when the visitor was on a tactical ride in heat 5) in his six outings.

Meanwhile Kyle Howarth also had a solid evening from the number one berth starting out with two race wins before being headed home by Palm Toft in heat 10 and then again in heat 15.

Some of the night's most spectacular overtaking action came from Kenneth Hansen, who raced to a paid 17 score from six outings at reserve - his only defeat coming from Theo Pijper in heat 8. However, his ride in heat 14 really was right out of the top drawer as he battled through to second place to follow Matty Wethers home and record the Comets fifth 5-1 of the night.

Rene Bach and Kyle Howarth lined up against Palm Toft and Pijper in heat 15 and, although Rene led from the tapes, Palm Toft was able to take second place and keep Kyle back in third place while Pijper slowed on the last lap.
