WORKINGTON COMETS 61 REDCAR BEARS 29 (Premier League) – Saturday 15th August 2015
On a bright night at Derwent Park the Comets notched up their biggest win so far this season to remain the only side with an unbeaten Premier League home record when they saw off the Redcar Bears with a resounding 61-29 victory last night.
Workington riders took the chequered flag on ten occasions, with every Comet winning at least one race and they recorded six 5-1's in the process, and the Comets had no rider finishing last all evening in a match that they dominated throughout!
Despite the big margin of victory there was plenty for the Comets fans to savour with Kenneth Hansen producing some great overtaking moves, especially in heat 5 when he came from behind to defeat Steve Worrall (see photo above) and again in heat 14 when he somehow squeezed between Redcar guest Simon Nielsen and the turn two fence to take the lead. Meanwhile in the final race he never gave up the chase and grabbed third place from Jonas Andersen on the run in to the finish line.
Comets captain Rene Bach raced to an excellent victory in heat 12 when he went from last to first inside the first lap while Somerset's Richie Worrall did a great job as a guest for the injured Kyle Howarth, picking up 11 points from four rides and dropping his only point in heat 13 when beaten by his brother Steve; who was riding as a guest for Redcar in place of the injured Lasse Bjerre.
Matt Williamson had his best ever night in Comets colours with a 9+1 score and fellow reserve Matthew Wethers picked up 10+4 on what was another great night for him. Meanwhile the Comets amassed 7+3 from Rusty Harrison's four rider replacement rides.
For the Bears Steve Worrall included three race wins in his 11 point score from five rides – having been defeated by Kenneth Hansen in his second ride and then been excluded from heat 11 for not being under power when the green light was on.
Matej Kus was the Bears only other race winner; leading all the way to win heat 3 in a very quick time (equalling the fastest time recorded by a visiting rider around Derwent Park so far this season) and then winning heat 10, but when donning the ‘black and white' for a tactical ride in heat 8 he could only finish third, behind Matthew Wethers and Rene Bach, giving the Bears no additional points.
