The Comets season gets underway this Saturday evening at Derwent Park, starting at 7:00pm!
The Comets get their 2016 season underway this Saturday (26th March) at 7:00pm when they entertain the strongly-fancied Newcastle Diamonds in the first leg of the Ian Thomas Shield, which the Comets currently hold.
This will be the first track appearance of the 2016 Comets as a team, with Ricky Wells, Kenneth Hansen and Matt Williamson all returning from 2015 while Claus Vissing makes his first ever appearance as a Comet.
However, for Adam Roynon and Mason Campton it is a case of welcome back to Workington for them both. Adam last rode for the Comets in 2012 while for Mason it will be his first appearance in a Comets race-jacket since 2014 after missing all of last season due to visa issues.
The other Comets new face, Rasmus Jensen, will not be available until the Comets visit Redcar on 7th April in a League Cup group fixture, so rider Replacement will operate for him this weekend against the Diamonds.
This match will also mark the first meeting where Ricky Wells will captain the side, having taken over the role following Rene Bach's decision to sit out the 2016 UK season. Meanwhile, local teenager Daniel Bewley has been named as the Comets number 8 for the fixture.
The Comets opponents, the Newcastle Diamonds are without their new number one – up and coming British star Robert Lambert, who has a prior racing commitment in Germany. However in Glasgow's Richie Worrall they have a more than adequate guest in his place as he teams up with his twin brother Steve for the evening.
This meeting will also mark the Newcastle debut of their winter signing from Redcar; Czech rider Matej Kus, while at number 2 the Diamonds track former Comet Tero Aarnio.
