A disappointing night at Newcastle!

After two encouraging performances against Edinburgh the Comets had a disappointing night in their League Cup fixture at Newcastle on Sunday, where they were unable to reproduce their performance of four weeks previous in the Ian Thomas Shield.
As a result the Comets were defeated 56-37 and so failed to pick up any League Cup match points towards their quest to finish top of the three-team group, which also includes Redcar.
The Comets trailed by 10 points (17-7) after four heats but a victory on a tactical ride for Ricky in heat 5 narrowed the gap to just 7 points, and at the end of heat 12 that gap had only grown by another two points as the Diamonds led 42-33 with three races to go.
However, Ricky was only able to split the Newcastle pairing of Steve Worrall and Robert Lambert in heat 13 as the Diamonds secured their victory before a Newcastle 5-1 in heat 14 ensured we would have no match points to take back to West Cumbria.
Then, in heat 15, Ricky started from the inside gate before being pushed towards the infield by Robert Lambert on the run up to the first turn, which effectively ended his race, while Claus could only follow the Newcastle pairing round for four laps as they claimed a second successive Diamonds 5-1 to run out slightly flattering 56-37 winners.
But, with the Comets only recording three race winners all night (one of which was Ricky's TR in heat 5) it was always going to be an uphill battle against the much faster starting Diamonds.
Newcastle 'Sapphire Engineering' Diamonds 56
Robert Lambert 12+1, R/R for the injured Tero Aarnio, Matej Kus 8+1, Ludvig Lindgren 9+2, Steve Worrall 14, Lewis Rose 11+1, Danny Phillips 2+1.
Workington 'Thomas Armstrong' Comets 37
Ricky Wells 12, Rasmus Jensen 3+1, Kenneth Hansen 4+1, Mason Campton 5, Claus Vissing 7, Adam Roynon 4+1, Matt Williamson 2+1.
