Comets v Somerset washed out!

Unfortunately tonight's eagerly anticipated Comets v Somerset Premier League clash fell victim to the weather.
After a dry and relatively warm day, apart from a very short shower around 1:30pm, the track was in perfect condition until a heavy rain shower arrived around 5:30pm, which lasted for around 45 minutes.

Following the heavy shower the track staff worked on the circuit, with the option of delaying the start by up to thirty minutes if necessary in order to get the meeting on.

A further inspection was carried out with both team managers, both captains and the referee before the reluctant decision was taken to postpone the meeting.

At present no new date has been agreed between the clubs.

Comets team manager and co-promoter Tony Jackson said:

"Unfortunately the wrong amount of rain arrived at just the wrong time.

"We gave the circuit as much time as was practical to do so in order to see how things would work out but in the end we reluctantly had to admit defeat on this occasion.

"We also had to bear in mind that the supporters had waited patiently outside while we did what we could to see if the meeting could be saved, but time was against us in the end with the amount of work that needed to be done and of course with how long we could sensibly keep the supporters waiting outside.

"What we did not want to do was get the supporters into the stadium and then call the meeting off, nor did we want to start the meeting if we weren't confident of racing the full fifteen heats; as that does no-one any favours at all. But, we were determined to give the meeting every possible chance that we could to go ahead.

"The Comets promotion would like to thank the supporters for being so patient, the track staff for their work in trying to salvage the situation and the Somerset riders and management for their co-operation in trying to get the meeting to go ahead; but unfortunately in the end it was simply not to be!"

Our next home meeting will be next Saturday, 2nd July at 7:00pm, when we take on the Glasgow Tigers in a Premier League fixture - with the Tigers now including former Comets Richard Lawson and Rene Bach in their line-up.
