The Comets claimed three more vital league points last night in a last race thriller as skipper Ricky Wells won the crucial heat 15 (see above photo) to give the Comets an excellent 46-44 victory over the Danny King inspired Ipswich Witches!
There were never more than four points between the two sides throughout the match but, following a Comets 4-2 in heat 2, Workington led until the Witches made up their four-point deficit to level the scores after heat 12.

As an illustration of just how close the match was, ten of the fifteen heats were shared and neither side managed to record a 5-1 at any point in the match.

The Comets went into the meeting without Rasmus Jensen, who was competing in the European Pairs Championship Final at Riga in Latvia – where he was partnered by Michael Jepsen Jensen, while Ipswich were missing Nico Covatti, who was competing in the same meeting.

No facilty is permitted for any European Championship meetings so both sides were forced to use a National League rider as a replacement - the Comets called on Workington-based Ryan Blacklock and the Witches used former Comet (from early 2009) Luke Priest.

With the sides level after heat 12, a Comets 4-2 from race-winner Ricky and Claus over British Champion Danny King and Morten Risager in heat 13 proved to be pivotal. Then, with ex-Comet Joe Jacobs leading Matt and Adam home in heat 14 for yet another 3-3, it meant that the Comets just needed a share of the points against the in-form Danny King and Ben Barker in heat 15!

The Comets chose gates 1 and 3, with Ricky making a lightning start from the inside gate and riding an excellent line to hold King behind him all the way to the chequered flag. Meanwhile, Barker held a determined Kenneth back in last place for all four laps; but it was to no avail for the Witches as Ricky's race-win ensured it was a Comets victory on the night, although the Witches did collect what could prove to be a vital match point.
