Another three visiting riders announced for The Cumberland Open Championship
The line-up for the Comets opening fixture of 2017; The Cumberland Open Championship, is continuing to take shape with the announcement of the next three visiting riders taking part – two of whom are former Comets!

The first of those is the popular Finnish rider Tero Aarnio, who joined the club mid-way through 2012 and remained a Comet throughout 2013. Since then the 32 year-old had a short spell with Glasgow in 2014 before joining Newcastle mid-way through 2015. He lined up for them at the start of last season but a troublesome knee injury saw him ruled out after just one meeting. Since then he has undergone knee surgery and an extensive rehabilitation regime, so tonight sees him making his British track return while also putting himself in the shop window as he is currently without a British club for 2017.

The other former Comet that we have pleasure in announcing this week is the all-action Dane Ulrich Ostergaard, who rode for the Comets in the second half of 2007 when he very quickly won the hearts of Comets supporters with some hard and entertaining racing. The intervening years have seen the 35 year-old spend his time predominantly with Redcar and parent club Peterborough, with who he lines up for a fourth successive season in 2017 and, while with the Panthers he was crowned Premier League Riders' Champion in 2015.

Joining those two Comets in the line-up is another great entertainer of British speedway, Ben Barker, who originates from Truro in Cornwall. While spending some time with Coventry and Birmingham in the top flight Ben, who turned 29 years of age just two weeks ago, has ridden for an array of clubs in the second tier of British speedway in recent years. This has seen him based as far south as Plymouth and as far north as Glasgow, while also representing Berwick Peterborough and Ipswich. However, 2017 sees him with another new home circuit as he lines up for Redcar Bears.

These three riders join the already announced former Comets Ricky Wells and Nathan Greaves, along with Danish star Nicolai Klindt and the entire 2017 Comets contingent for what promises to be a very keenly contested season opener at Derwent Park on Saturday 25th March, with the tapes rising on the new season at 7:00pm.
