WORKINGTON COMETS 54 IPSWICH WITCHES 38 (SGB Championship)
Saturday 27th May 2017

The Comets inflicted defeat on another of the SGB Championship's much-fancied sides with an excellent 54-38 success over Ipswich at Derwent Park last night.

In fact were it not for some mechanical gremlins that score would have been even higher!

Leading the Comets charge was skipper Craig Cook with 14 points - his only defeat coming at the hands of Rory Schlein in heat 6.

A 10+2 return from Matt Williamson and 10 points from Ty Proctor gave Craig the most support while Thomas Jorgensen would have added to his 8 point tally but for a last lap fall in heat 13 when in third place.

Thomas knocked his left shoulder in the fall but he fully anticipates being fit to take his place in the side at Peterborough on Bank Holiday Monday.

However, reserve Rob Shuttleworth was not as fortunate when, as a result of a heat 4 crash with Nathan Greaves, he sustained concussion and was taken to hospital.

That will rule him out of our visit to Peterborough and next Saturday's trip to Berwick.

Leading the Witches assault was Danny King with 12 points and Rory Schlein with 10 points.

With thunderstorms raging less than five miles away in all directions, Derwent Park incredibly avoided them all and provided an entertaining meeting on a track which,
following some major grading work before the re-run of heat 4, provided good racing.

The Comets led throughout and provided twelve race winners while only Rory
Schlein and captain Danny King won a race for Ipswich, however while they racked up double figures they received little support from their team-mates; none of whom scored more than four points.

On a night where there were several crashes the first of these came in heat 2 when Nathan Greaves bounced off the back straight fence, which caused him to fall and slide along the track as the following two riders somehow managed to miss him.

Then, in heat 4, second placed Greaves appeared to lock up slightly on turn four of the opening lap, which caused Rob to run into him and high-side in a nasty crash for both riders, which ruled Rob out of the meeting with concussion.

Ipswich team manager Ritchie Hawkins gave Danny King a tactical ride in heat 5, which saw him eventually battle past James Sarjeant at the end of lap three but he had to make do with second place behind fast-starting Ty. While at the back Cameron Heeps spun and fell spectacularly on turn three of the last lap.

Meanwhile Ty shed a rear chain when leading on turn four of the opening lap in heat 9. However, by taking maximum points from heats 10 and 12 the Comets virtually had the match in the bag before heat 13, which saw Craig gain revenge over Schlein for his heat 6 defeat, while Thomas fell awkwardly on turn two of the final lap when in third place, banging his left shoulder in the process and causing the race to be awarded.

With Matt Williamson having resolved the mid-meeting carburettor problems that restricted his scoring for three outings he was a comfortable winner of heat 14 to ensure the Witches could no longer take away a match point; before Craig and Ty gained another Comets heat advantage in the last race.
