Race Day Update! - It is All Systems Go!
Sat 31 Mar 2018 by Comets Press Office
The new season at Workington Speedway is almost upon us as we build up to this evening's Cumberland Open!
After months of waiting the day has finally arrived and everything is in place for tonight's season opener!

While the south of the country had a wet day yesterday it was totally dry and often bright in Workington and the same is set to be the case for today.

There is a chance of a very light rain shower putting down less than 1mm at around 12 noon but other than that a dry day and evening is forecast by all weather forecasting sources. So, unlike many yesterday, we will have to actually add water to the track ourselves!

Following the three line-up changes announced yesterday we do have one more late change to announce as last year's third-placed rider Ben Barker has been forced to withdraw but we are very grateful to his new Redcar team-mate Theo Pijper for agreeing to step in to replace him at such short notice.

The meeting gets underway at Derwent Park at 7:00pm this evening.

As previously announced; Season Ticket holders from ALL clubs (including Workington) can gain entry for just £10, with £5 of that reduced entry fee going to the Speedway Riders' Benevolent Fund, in a laudable effort by the club to support a very worthy cause after the recent early season Ben Fund meeting at Peterborough had to be postponed.

There will also be collection buckets by the turnstiles for any additional donations; and all money donated on the night by way of the reduced admission offer and the collection buckets will be added to the £325 that was collected as donations at last Saturday's Official Press & Practice Day.

In addition there will also be Free Easter Eggs for kids on entry and, for those that want to take part, there will be a Decorated Egg and Easter Bonnet competition taking place, which will be judged by the riders.

With a new admissions system in place at Derwent Park for both Rugby League and Speedway this year (for further details please see separate news article on this website) we urge all patrons to arrive as early as possible this evening in an effort to ensure that this runs as smoothly as possible.

The full 16-rider line-up now consists of:
Rene Bach, Nicolai Klindt, Rasmus Jensen, Dan Bewley, Mason Campton and Kyle Bickley (all Workington). They are joined by former Comets: Claus Vissing (Glasgow), Kyle Howarth (Sheffield), Ricky Wells (Edinburgh), Ulrich Ostergaard (Peterborough), Charles Wright (Sheffield) and Simon Lambert (Peterborough), along with former British Champion Scott Nicholls (Peterborough), Theo Pijper (Redcar), Rory Schlein (Ipswich) and the highly-rated new American rider Max Ruml (Edinburgh).

This promises to be a night not to be missed - we really hope to see you there!
