The Comets overcame the Edinburgh Monarchs 47-43 in an exciting clash at Derwent Park tonight.
The Comets finally got their season underway after three rain-offs with a hard-fought home victory over Edinburgh at Derwent Park in the first Championship Shield group match for both clubs.

Rasmus sped from gate one in the first heat to lead Ricky Wells all the way to the flag with Rene in third place to give the Comets a heat advantage.

But, in heat 2 it looked as if the Monarchs would even things up until guest Bradley Wilson-Dean rode hard under former Comets favourite Matt Williamson on turns three and four of the last lap to force him wide and take the race win and maintain the Comets two-point advantage.

The next two heats were shared as first Mark Riss and then brother Erik Riss took the chequered flag. However, the visitors raced to a 4-2 in heat 5 to level the scores when Ricky Wells took the flag from Dan, while Max Ruml took third place as the Comets other guest, Charles Wright had some machinery issues.

A shared heat 6 kept the two sides locked together before Nicolai won heat 7 with Kyle taking third place after Mark Riss had fallen hard into the air fence on turn four of the opening lap when in second place - and fair play to Mark Riss for the great effort he made to clear the track in time to allow the race to continue.

This restored the Comets two-point advantage before a Comets maximum heat advantage in heat 8 increased that to six points. However, this allowed the Monarchs to introduce Ricky Wells as a tactical substitute partner for Erik Riss in heat 9.

But, a machine problem for Riss just as he was leaving the pits saw him excluded for exceeding the two-minute time allowance and he was then nominated to start from a 15-metre handicap from gate 3. But, by the time he had passed Dan Bewley on lap three he was unable to catch Charles Wright.

But, a second Comets 5-1 of the evening; this time from Rasmus and Rene in heat 10, saw the Comets move up to eight points in front as they led 34-26. However, despite a Ricky Wells inspired heat advantage in the next, a shared heat 12 (won by Charles Wright) meant that the Comets still led by six points going into heat 13.

Ricky Wells led heat 13 from start to finish but a tough ride by the Comets captain for the night, Rene Bach, saw him charge hard under Erik Riss as they exited turn four on the third lap to take second place in a move that forced him wide and obviously didn't please the German racer judging by the way he reacted to Rene in the pits afterwards!

However, with Dan and Bradley racing to the Comets third 5-1 of the match in heat 14 the Comets secured victory with a race to spare, which was just as well as the Monarchs top pairing of Ricky Wells and Erik Riss sped from their chosen gates 1 and 3 in heat 15 to take maximum points and make the final score 47-43 to the Comets; giving the Comets three Championship Shield points and one point to the Monarchs.
