Comets held at home by Bandits!

The Comets were held to a 45-45 draw at home by Berwick tonight in their Championship Shield group clash.
The Bandits out-gated the Comets throughout the night leaving them with too much to do in several races. However, although the Comets were never in front at any point they were able to fight their way back onto level terms in the second half of the meeting as they came back from an eight-point deficit to snatch a draw.
Nicolai Klindt, with five race wins, was in sensational form, racing to an 18-point haul from seven rides, including a victory when used as a tactical substitute in heat 6.
Workington also incurred some misfortune when reserve Bradley Wilson-Dean suffered a split fuel pipe in heat 2, which caused him to drop points and then he received an exclusion in heat 14 after a clash with Jye Etheridge; in which Bradley also twisted his knee making him a doubt for tomorrow's return fixture at Berwick.
The Comets were missing Rene Bach, who was on Danish League duty, while the faster-starting visitors got their noses in front with a maximum heat advantage in heat 2.
The Bandits soon established an eight-point advantage, however the Comets first maximum heat advantage in the sixth heat, from tactical substitute Nicolai Klindt and partner Rasmus Jensen, halved the Comets deficit; only for the Bandits to extend it back to 8 points after heat 8.
Heat 9 was awarded after third placed John Lindman slid hard into the turn three fence at speed on lap 2; giving the Comets a heat advantage, while the next heat saw Rasmus become the first rider to defeat the fast-starting Dany Gappmaier with an excellent outside pass of him as they neared the end of the opening lap.
The in-form Nicolai Klindt stormed to his fourth race win of the night in the heat 11 before captain Ty and Bradley Wilson-Dean took maximum points in heat 12 after Bradley had passed Jye Etheridge on the second lap, just as he had done earlier in heat 8.
A heat advantage for the Comets in heat 13 saw the two sides level at 39-39 before Dany Gappmaier again sped from the tapes to lead heat 14. Meanwhile at the back Bradley chased and caught Jye Etheridge before attempting to go under him on turn one of the third lap. This resulted in Etheridge falling and Bradley being excluded, referee Stuart Wilson again awarding the race.
Then, in heat 15 with Nicolai moving into second place as they entered the back straight for the first time it looked like the Comets may snatch an unlikely victory until former Comet Kevin Doolan managed to split the Comets pair on turns three and four of the first lap to force a draw.
